This course gave me an opportunity to explore woke as a real cultural phenomenon without the bias and stigma linked to it in day to day living. In this forum I found a safe space, knowledgeable and caring peers. The amount of information to absorb was astounding and provided relevant and useful background to the discussions in the course. If the world is to become a kinder and gentler place, these learnings are a must.

The Woke: The Origins, Dynamics and Implications of an Elite Ideology course gave a framework and discussion forum to identify key conversations in the woke phenomena; to hypothesise and explore the validity of perspectives contributing to and disseminating from the woke ideology. The course was very well organised and formed a platform for the its multinational cohort of students to share and exchange knowledge of their experiences in engaging with and understanding of woke ideology within different national contexts and expressions.

As a historian, I’m delighted to have been part of the inaugural class in this new discipline in the just opened Center. I am a classic liberal who appreciates the Enlightenment and how it has enriched the world. These woke regressives are destroying that legacy and undermining Western civilization. I know that there is now a groundswell growing against this ideology and I’m delighted to have taken this course with Eric. For me, he is now one of the Three Horsemen in the company of Chris Rufo and Richard Hanania mounting the challenge to this. If I can secure funding to do a Masters, I will apply for in fall 2025. Great course, good work, keep going!

I found Prof. Kaufmann’s delivery excellent. Their content was interesting, and simulating. Coming from a computing background, I discovered some very interesting people that I had never come across before, such as Daniel Bell. The reading lists and slides were very good, but, having poor eyesight, I found them hard to read on screen, so I tried to print them out. This was mostly fine, although a couple were not that successful. I have decided to buy about half of the coursebooks, and I am looking forward to some further study. Whilst the origins of woke seem to be mainly American, some more European cases would be interesting; available time may have been a factor here. Given the IT and library support, I thought the course was very good value for money. All in all, I am very pleased with my decision to take the course.

When enrolling, I had little ‘expectation’, only an amorphous ‘confusion’. The course has proven to be immensely informative and educational, and has exposed paradigms of thought of which I was previously unaware. Many thanks to Professor Kaufmann for this course of ‘enlightenment’, and to my fellow students for their insights. If offered I will take the course again.

Most certainly value for money. The course was detailed and covered all aspects of a complex subject from a variety of perspectives and methods. Given my own interests, the lectures covering historical and philosophical routes were the most interesting, particularly the line from the New Left through the 60/70s liberation movements to 21st Century Woke-ism. Also, there was a clear insight into and consistent reference to the left critique of Woke-ism, which I feel is very important (class v identity) right from Marx (re: Utopian Socialism) through to the present. Perhaps there was a little too much data and survey analysis for me, and I did find this repetitive. But overall, an excellent and highly informative course.

I’ve already submitted a detailed complaint. It hit ignored so I complained direct to Professor Kaufmann. He organised a £400 refund. I will not be returning to UoB. Very unprofessional organisation.

For quite some time now, I have been preoccupied with the question of what has happened in Western societies that has led to these societal upheavals, these political trench wars. As I am always interested in contemporary historical and current political topics, the course was extraordinarily interesting for me and gave me a good insight into what happens every day ‘on my doorstep’.

I did the online only option and it was exceptional value for money. The lectures were very well presented and covered the subject matter in detail. I liked the self-paced option as I am in full time employment. Access to the lectures and course material was easy to set up. Overall I was very impressed with all aspects of the course and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone interested in the origins and evolution of today’s woke ideology. My thanks to Eric and everyone else involved in putting the course together.
